Getting there

You can fly to either Cagliari (Elmas), Alghero (Fertilia) or Olbia airports. If you are travelling from the West Country (UK) the Bristol-Olbia route is very convenient and the scenary driving through the Barbagia mountains is absolutely stunning.

For those of you who prefer not to fly, you can of course drive to Sardinia from the UK! The best route we have found will take a couple of days, taking the ferry from Dover - Calais, driving through France into Italy and finally boarding the ferry at Genova, which takes you to Porto Torres in the north of Sardinia. For more information on booking the ferry please click here.

We advise you to hire a car for you holiday as public transport can be limited. If you do not drive, buses and taxis are available for transfer from the airports. See transfer times and distances above. Taxi transfers quotes online.

Both Alghero and Cagliari airports have car hire companies based on-site and you can find their offices in the arrivals lounges. The staff are helpful and can speak English if you are not confident in Italian!

Children's car seats can be pre-booked for a cost of approximately 40 Euros. You collect these at the car hire office. If you wish to save a few Euros, children's booster seats are usually acceptable as hand luggage, so you can bring your own! Insurance on hire cars is third party and if you wish to take out fully comprehensive insurance you will be required to pay an additional charge.
